Winter in Húsavík: Whales and Northern Lights!

The thing about Iceland is that it’s a country of breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife! However, you can’t experience everything all at once, and that’s part of its beauty.

Winter has come, and so have the Northern Lights

Northern lights over Húsavík

In Húsavík, winter has arrived, covering the town and surrounding mountains in a white blanket. The iconic puffins have migrated, but whales still roam the bay, and now we have the chance to enjoy the northern lights!

See Northern Lights in Northern Iceland

Northern Iceland is an ideal spot to witness this incredible phenomenon that has fascinated people for thousands of years, inspiring many legends. The polar lights, also known as aurora polaris, occur at both the North and South Poles. They are called the northern lights, or aurora borealis, and the southern lights, or aurora australis.

Although we see them at night, the auroras are actually thanks to the Sun! The Sun emits electronically charged particles, known as solar wind, which interact with Earth’s magnetic field, redirecting them toward the poles. Upon entering the atmosphere, these particles interact with those in the upper layers, releasing energy in the form of light – the auroras!

Auroras can appear in various colors, including green, pink, red, and blue. The color depends on the type of atmospheric particles involved and the altitude at which these interactions occur.

Now is the perfect time to visit!

We’re currently in the middle of the solar cycle (~11 years), and from July 2024 to January 2025, peak solar activity is expected, bringing bright auroras. Don’t miss your chance to see them!
